Understanding knee pain
Knee pain and injury can be categorised into 2 broad categories:
Traumatic knee pain
Occurrs after an incident, such as twisting your knee, falling on your knee, etc with a clear mechanism of injury. Examples include ACL tear, meniscus tear, patellofemoral joint dislocation
Non-traumatic knee pain
Occurs with no inciting incident or mechanism of injury. Will often progressively build up over time and leads to pain that seemingly ‘comes out of nowhere.’ Examples include patellofemoral pain (runners knee), chronic meniscus pain/tears, ITB pain
How we approach rehab
While the specifics of rehab will vary depending on the type of injury and your goals, our approach is always centred on accurate diagnosis, thoughtful symptom management, followed by building adequate leg strength to help you regain capacity and return to the activities that matter to you.
Our approach
Individualised assessment
This helps us to diagnose your knee pain accurrately. We will discuss your diagnosis and if any scans are required to ensure appropriate management
Tailored, goal-based rehabilitation
Your rehab plan is built around your diagnosis and goals. We will focus on ensuring you recieve the neccessary symptom management, then work together to build strength, control and capacity to ensure you achieve your goals.
If you aren’t testing, you are guessing
We utilise strength and capacity testing to ensure you are ready to progress through each stage of your rehab and that you return to general exercise and activity when your knee is ready. This helps us decrease flare-ups throughout your recovery and return to your goals sooner.
Hands on treatment as needed
Where helpful, we may use hands-on techniques such as manual therapy, taping or dry needling to reduce pain and improve movement. These treatments are used to support your progress through rehab and can be particularly useful in the early stages of your rehab
